For well over 30 years I have watched the superior court judges of Thurston County uphold all things government, left, labor, and green. This week the Olympian newspaper reported that a brave superior court judge ruled against a pleading by largest state employee union seeking to halt work furloughs.
Write down the date. It may be precedent-setting. For sure the judge will need some campaign help next time around. You know they run for office, don’t you? The way our laws are written by the bench, it is a wonder. Anyway, hurrah for the court.
It was sad enough that the union brought the case. In the middle, we hope the end, of the Great Recession, we are all sharing hardships. It is pathetic P.R. and worse logic to suggest that state employees can’t afford to take a day or two off. I guess the old joke that no one will notice made them nervous.
State employees are surely a good lot. They work hard, right? It’s not about them. It’s about the Washington Federation of State Employees.
Even sadder was that Randy Dorn, our head schoolmaster, was in the news again. He reluctantly will go along with the ruling. It will save about $100K per day at OSPI alone.
